What are you reading?

Standard

I love science fiction. I always have. I like the “what if” aspects of everything. Steampunk is one aspect of science fiction that I find fascinating. The historical mash up with the futuristic…

In this book, Steampunk! An Anthology of Fantastically Rich and Strange Stories is a really fun read. There are fourteen authors giving us stories of “alternate universes where romance and technology reign. Where tinkerers and dreamers craft and re-craft a world of automatons, clockworks, calculating machines, and other marvels that never were. Where scientists and schoolgirls, fair folk and Romans, intergalactic bandits, utopian revolutionaries, and intrepid orphans solve crimes, escape from monstrous predicaments, consult oracles, and hover over volcanoes in steam-powered airships.”

Aimed at young adults, anyone will enjoy these stories. I’m most definitely not YA – but I loved this anthology. It’s been out for a couple of years (2011), so you may have a hard time finding it, but it is definitely worth a look. Some of the authors include Cory Doctorow, Garth Nix, Holly Black, Kathleen Jennings and more.

Like most anthologies, there were stories I absolutely loved, and others that were “okay” – but overall, I enjoyed the entire book enough to recommend it to you all. You can find it at Amazon and Candlewick Press.

Writing Reapers Was All A Mystery To Me

Reap & Repent (647x1024)I didn’t orginally sit down to write a book about reapers. Reapers aren’t sexy. Reapers are death. And skeletal. And…grim.  I first tried writing about vampires because, well, VAMPIRES. When I gave the first 30K of my first real novel attempt to my BFF, her reply was, “It’s good, but what makes it different?”

Erm, nothing. Same old story. Same old (okay, old but HOT vampires). I needed something different. Something that might stand out in a crowded field of paranormal monsters in love.

I chose reapers. And then I set out to make them better. Still human-looking but human DELUXE! Lots of dark potential there. I sat down and got to work making a world for them to live in, threw in some demons, an evil fallen angel and the Reaper Series was born.

Reap & Repent is Deacon and Ruth’s story.

Once I started writing, it didn’t take long for Deacon and Ruth to take over. I wasn’t telling their story. They were telling their story. About halfway through, I realized we all three needed a plan and finally sat down and organized all of the sticky notes, which had previously been decorating my car dashboard, writing cave desk and notebooks. I typed them up and printed them out.

HOLY COW, I had a plot! So THAT’s how that happens.

From that point on, I put Deacon and Ruth in peril, threw roadblocks in their way, and let their love grow until I reached the end, some eighty thousand words later.

And THE END ends with one of my favorite things.

BACON.

If you’d like to see how it all plays out, here’s your chance. Book one of the reaper series, Reap & Repent, is available now. Here’s a taste.

Lisa Medley BW2 Facebook CropLisa Medley writes reapers. The grim kind. Her urban fantasy romance, Reap & Repent is available now in a Harlequin E Box Set with three other Harlequin debut authors. A lover of beasties of all sorts, she has a farm full of them in her SW MO home including:  one child, one husband, two dogs, two cats, a dozen hens, thousands of Italian bees and a guinea pig. Not so in love with the guinea pig. She can do ten pushups IN A ROW and may or may not have a complete zombie apocalypse bug-out bag in her trunk at all times. Just. In. Case.

Reap & Repent Blurb:

Deacon Walker is a burned out loner, whose two hundred years as a reaper have left him empty inside. But when he meets Ruth Scott, a gorgeous shut-in with unusual gifts, he’s forced to set his career complacency aside to train her for a destiny she never knew existed. Soon the two will face the ultimate test: a battle against demons determined to destroy humanity, one soul at a time.

Prologue from Reap & Repent:

Prologue

What does a guy have to do around here to get some service? Deacon Walker marveled as he glared at the undulating queue of grotesque reapers in front of him.

For all that’s holy, move the hell along already.

It had been a long week, and it wasn’t over yet. He needed to make at least one more pass through the hospital circuit before he could call it a day. He could already feel the tug of a freshly departed soul. Again. People were dropping like flies lately.

He massaged his brow, trying to soothe his exhausted patience as the line inched forward at a snail’s pace.

He was worn thin. Over the past few weeks, three demon soul poachers had popped up in his fair city of Meridian like poisonous mushrooms after a hard rain. While it wasn’t unheard of for one to slip out from Hell every now and then, three was a nightmare.

When it got topside, a demon’s M.O. was to steal a human body, poach a few souls from the dead and dying, and then make its merry way back to Hell, taking its host’s soul along for the ride. The only way to save the souls a poacher was carrying was to behead the host with a scythe. Not a pretty thing to do, but the poor suckers were too far gone by then to survive anyway. No human could withstand the pressures of being ridden by a demon. And it was worth it to save a handful of souls, not to mention inconveniencing the demon.

Deacon refused to lose any souls from his territory. At all.

So far the score was Deacon, 3. Demons, 0.

As a reaper, carrying souls to Purgatory for judgment was his job and he wasn’t about to cede his territory to poachers who used up their hosts like they were disposable Tupperware. So now, in addition to his normal day job, he also had to keep an eye out for more demon invaders.

While demons burned through most human hosts in a matter of days, some in a matter of hours, they had discovered long ago that under the right circumstances they could ride a reaper. Of course, they couldn’t just worm their way in like they did with humans—they had to be invited. But once a deal was struck? They were in.

And reapers? Yeah, they could hang on for decades inside a reaper. Deacon knew that fact firsthand.

His stomach twisted at the thought, but he shook it off, looking ahead with a heavy sigh.

Seriously, this line? Still. Not. Moving?

God, he needed a freakin’ vacation. Extended. He dragged a hand through his hair in frustration as his mind flipped through postcard-esque locations of reapings past. He snarled at the thought of New Orleans in summer. He would definitely want to go someplace cool—cool as in frigid, not hip. He was sick of the heat, and it was only the beginning of summer in the semitropical Midwest.

Come to think of it, he was sick of a lot of things.

This place was high on the list. It was as hot as…well, Hell actually. Or at least what he imagined Hell to be, although he’d never actually been there. Thank God.

Steam rose from random cracks in the stone floor of the underground station, veiling the place in a humid sulfur stench.

He pushed forward, finally making his way to the front to deposit his cargo of souls. He didn’t bother chatting. In. Out. Move on. It was a motto that served him well.

Mission completed, he hustled through the crowd, forgoing the bar-side frivolity of some of the more socially inclined reapers and their small talk about their glory days in the field or—even better—the missteps of the newest reapers. Newbies often tested their limits to humorous if not disastrous effect at least once in their early careers. That was exactly why new reapers had mentors or at least worked in teams. From all the laughter, he could tell that the stories were good ones. It didn’t tempt him.

He slapped his palm against the black granite monolith and flashed out of Purgatory to what he prayed was his last stop of the day.

Writing Process Take Two!

Standard

I got invited a second time to do this writing process thing and didn’t want to say no. I however was not able to find anyone else to follow me, so I guess this track stops here 🙂 But please go see Alli Sinclair’s awesome blog from last week at her blog

My Writing Process – Blog Tour

My questions this time will deal with writing mysteries
1)     What am I working on?
The next book in the Ivy Series, the first new one in almost ten years, is up next for me. It’s called Cremains of the Day and I cannot wait!
2)     How does my work differ from others of its genre?
The answer for this one might be a little similar tot h e last in that I think I bring a quirkiness and a certain sense of fun that isn’t always seen in this type of story. Ivy is a hoot and has made many a person guffaw.
3)     Why do I write what I do?
I love mysteries and I love Ivy. She’s me in so many ways and me+30% is others. She makes me laugh and Ben makes me sigh. What more could you want?
4)     How does your writing process work?
For the mysteries, I always start out with who’s going to be the victim then go from there. Why? Who would want to kill this person? In what fashion will their demise come to pass? How can I kick it up jsut a notch beyond normal? What on earth will Ivy do this time?
Thanks for reading! I’m pretty sure this will be the last one I do, but you never know 🙂 LOL!

Our very first What Are You Reading?!

What is Natalie Reading?
Hello! Here at The Whole Shebang Site we always like to have recommendations for fabulous books we might be missing out on. Vicky and I encourage you to let us know what you’re reading out there (go to the Give us a Holler page to let me know what you’re reading!). To kick things off we have Natalie Damschroder who has agreed to be our guinea pig…erm…first guest poster!
Take it away, Natalie!
I love when I get involved in a good action-adventure romance. The saddest day of my reading life was when Silhouette Bombshell shut down.
So I was so happy to get my hands on Sharron McClellan’s newest book, Risking it All For Her Boss. The hero and heroine work for a rescue agency, and it opens with Eva undercover to free a scientist from captivity in South America. The mission kind of goes FUBAR, and Quinn—her boss and ex—swoops in. She’s totally kick ass, but everything she does is driven by compassion and belief in the goodness of people. For his part, Quinn’s struggling to balance his need to protect himself, his job, and Eva. He loses, quite deliciously. There are enough twists to keep you guessing, and tons of fast-paced action. Just the way I like it. 🙂

Genre: Romantic Suspense
Author: Sharron McClellan
Publisher: Entangled Ignite
Pages: 204
Language: English
Format: Ebook

When High Risk Securities (HRS) agent, Eva Torres, botches an undercover job by failing to rescue both of the kidnap victims she was sent to retrieve, Quinn Blackwood—her former lover and the man who broke her heart—pulls her and one of the victims out of harm’s way. As a penalty for her sins, she’s offered the dull job of escorting a former bio-chemical warfare scientist to Washington D.C. to reunite with his daughter. Much to her displeasure, the job of monitoring her assignment is given to Quinn.

Quinn isn’t thrilled with the situation either. He taught Eva everything he knew about secrets, sex, and lies—but the biggest lie of all was the one he’d told himself: that his missions for HRS were more important than anything, including his relationship with Eva. Because now that they’re working together again, the urge to put his hands on her, to feel her beneath him, is killing him.

Things only get worse when their current operation goes wrong, and the scientist they’re guarding is kidnapped mid-air. Now, Eva and Quinn have to work together to find him before he is forced to create a monstrous weapon that could destroy entire cities. A hard task made more difficult when they find themselves fighting both the enemy and their building desire for each other. Can they work together for the sake of the mission without reigniting the passion between them—or will passion be the salvation of them all?

Blog Hop on the writing process…

Standard

Hi!

I was very nicely invited by Natalie Damschroder to participate in a blog hop about my writing process. Go check hers out if you haven’t already by clicking on her name!

So my writing process…Here are the burning questions:

Urban Fantasy & Paranormal Box Set 3D1)     What am I working on?

I am currently working on the third book in the Ink series for Harlequin E. These are all urban fantasy novellas that I adore. I was going to have Experimental Ink be the next up after Protective Ink, but then really felt drawn to making Fluid Ink the next installment. It’s going to be awesome!

2)     How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I think the most prominent difference in my writing is my sense of humor and my voice. They’re both strong (like the Force, Luke!) and add a flavor you do not always see in urban fantasy.

3)     Why do I write what I do?

I write what I do because I love the possibilities of more out there than we can see or know. Plus I have people to share with readers.

4)     How does your writing process work?

My writing process actually changes with almost every book. Sometimes I do a mind map, sometimes I outline first, sometimes I have the story pretty much worked out before I set the first letter on that blank page. Always, though, I have to know who my characters are at their very core so that I know how they will react to things and what kind of situations will test them the most.

Thanks for reading! I’ll be doing another on the other genre I write – Contemporary Romance – in two weeks!

When you’re done here, don’t forget to go next Monday 3/17 to the two wonderful authors whom I’ve invited to the blog hop:

Neely Powell is the pseudonym for co-writers Leigh Neely and Jan Hamilton Powell. The best friends met when they both worked at a rock ‘n roll radio station in Chattanooga. It turned out their husbands were long-lost high school buddies, and Jan and Leigh were both writing romantic fiction in their spare time. A partnership was born.
