Welcome Heidi on the eve of your book release!

marrymeWhat genre do your books fall into or is it a genre blended?”

HWK: I tend to blend Fantasy and Romance. Occasionally I’d write Science Fiction. I’ve got a soft spot for escapist fiction with HEA.

“Marry Me” is definitely a blended genre book. ‘Fantasy Romance’ is probably the best way to describe it. It’s got magic and smooches. Historical Fantasy Romance, maybe? My story takes place in 1905 New York City. Our Hero enchants candy hearts to do his talking for him. But most of all, it’s got smooches.

Do you listen to music or set the mood somehow to get writing?

HWK: Goodness, no! I’m a musician in one of my other lives. Whenever I hear music, I get drawn into it, so I find sound a bit of a distraction when I write. As for ‘getting in the mood’ for writing, I’m to the point where all I have to do is sit down and say, “Today I am going to write.” (Took me a while to be able to do this. Years, actually.)

Do you have a favorite book of yours?

HWK: My favourite? You’d ask a mother which child’s her favourite? (Not saying she doesn’t have one. *whistles*)

My favourite of my books is a fantasy trilogy I’m currently shopping around. It’s based on the Greek Adrasteia myths mixed with a dash of colonial Americana, and a god who won’t take no for an answer. Doesn’t hurt that he looks a lot like Richard Armitage.

Who would you consider an influence on your writing?

HWK: My writing mentor Anne Wingate, author of the Deb Ralson series (and a whole lotta other books). She once told me, “Why on earth are you studying biology when you should be writing books?” She’s terribly embarrassed she said that, but she was terribly right. Writing books are my passion. How does a Crime author come to mentor a Romance author? Easy. We both love Sci-Fi.

Tell me something quirky about yourself.

HWK: I’m a polymath. While I got my Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, my Master’s will be in science. When I’m not staring at the stars (or calculating Jeans mass for clouds of cold atomic hydrogen), I’m composing music. Alas, most of my other artistic pursuits have been pushed to the side so I have more time to focus on my writing career. But there will always be the stars and there will always be the music.

What do you aim to make people feel when they read your books?

HWK: I want people to escape. I want them to leave their mundane lives behind, with its sorrow and poopy diapers and the short end of pay week, to escape into the worlds I’ve created. Books were my lifeline as a child, a kind of emotional First Aid. I want to be able to give other readers that same method of escape. Life can really suck. Thank goodness we have books.

What’s next for you?

HWK: I’m currently exploring options for hybrid authors. Currently, all my books are commercially published. I love the teamwork of commercial publishing and I love how indie publishing offers authors a greater sense of control and timing. I’m currently working on a Regency Romance novella I plan on getting indie published.

Meanwhile, I have a ghost love story and an arranged marriage story earmarked for a small press. I’ve got that full-length Fantasy series on the query train, where some agent will fall deeply in love with it. Then she’ll have to negotiate a fierce battle between some random penguins before it hits the world like a virus. Maybe then I’ll learn the punchline to the joke “Stephenie Meyer, JK Rowling and Heidi Kneale walk into a bar, and the bartender says…” Until then, I’ve got some inventory in need of revising.

Do you sing in the shower?

Of course. I was trained as a coloratura Mezzo-Soprano. We get the coolest roles.

The last place Lorena Weber wants to be on Valentine’s Day is a singles party thrown by her newlywed best friend. But how can she say no? She’ll give it an hour—two, tops—and then she’s heading back to her normal life. But she didn’t plan on seeing the one man who had turned her world on its side New Year’s Eve with one kiss that opened doors she had firmly locked.

Caleb Manning got coerced into attending this ridiculous party by a co-worker. He’ll stay for an hour at most and then he’ll head home. That was the plan until he recognized Lorena across the room and had to see if that kiss was only New Year’s Eve magic or something more.

Excerpt:

By thirty-three he was on the verge of a divorce. The heart attack never came to pass, but the divorce had finalized just before New Year’s Eve, in time for the taxes to be screwed up.

But at least it was over. And he had celebrated New Year’s by going downtown to a local celebration where his new town actually dropped an eight-foot wrench from a crane in celebration of the New Year. The absurdity of the eight-foot wrench had distracted him from his loneliness for the moment. But then he’d been alone while everyone else was hugging and kissing at the stroke of midnight. He’d turned and seen the woman next to him was alone, too. They’d both laughed, shrugged, and then hugged. He hadn’t meant to kiss her, but she’d looked up at him with her mismatched eyes, and he couldn’t resist. Something had flared between them, something impossible to deny. Hell, he hadn’t even tried. It had been short, as kisses went, but it had packed a wallop. He hadn’t been able to get her name, and that was his only regret.

“Caleb!”

He hadn’t moved fast enough into the room for the ball of energy that was Melanie. She must have thought he wasn’t doing enough to immerse himself in her party. “Hey, Mel.”

“Did Dillon get your coat?”

“Yep.” He tucked his hands into his pockets and hunched a little. He felt gargantuan next to her.

“Well, come in and get something to drink. Mingle. The games are going to start in a few minutes, and I want you hydrated.” She smiled, and he blew out a soft breath. He’d had no idea what to expect, and the prospect of games did not exactly inspire confidence in him. But he could always step outside into the frigid February air if he had to. At least she’d calmed down on the exclamation points that had infused her voice for the last ten days. She was like one of the perpetually happy people he wanted to throttle except they were just too cute for him to actually do anything like that.

“Are you sure I can’t help you with anything?” He wasn’t above offering himself to kitchen duty to get out of playing games with a roomful of single people. Knowing Melanie, it would probably be something like Spin the Bottle.

“No, you can’t.” She grabbed his elbow, and he let her lead him out into the living room. “Mingle. And I can find you if you try to sneak away, so don’t.”

With that, she walked away in her four-inch heels like a drill sergeant on a mission, to greet more people coming through the door.

He made no eye contact as he headed for the buffet set up in the spacious dining room. He’d promised Melanie he’d come to her party to get her off his back about finding someone, but he had not agreed to participate in party games. An hour tops and he was leaving.

A woman laughed at the front of the line with a bunch of other women. The husky sound shot like one of Cupid’s arrows down his spine and landed in his gut. Where had he heard that laugh before?

He didn’t place it for a moment. But it all zinged into place when she turned toward him and he caught a full-faced glimpse of her mismatched eyes.

Thanks, Charlotte, for stopping in to do our interview!

RealLoveWhat genre do your books fall into or is it a genre blended? My main – and original – genre is paranormal romance, but I have a YA contemporary published, I’m working on a romantic suspense, and my current release is considered Futuristic Romance.

What inspires you to write?
Nothing and everything.

Do you listen to music or set the mood somehow to get writing?I couldn’t possibly listen to music. I get distracted too easily, and I’d end up singing along with the song. (And not very well.)

Do you have a favorite book of yours? Each book holds its own place in my heart (and on my wall). I have to say, just looking at the cover of REAL LOVE makes me smile, and the book itself is dedicated to my three girls.

Tell me something quirky about yourself. My oven died about 4 years ago and I’ve never replaced it. I hate to cook, so if I can’t barbeque it or if it doesn’t fit in my tiny toaster oven, then it doesn’t get made at my house.

What’s next for you? I’m at various stages of several romances at the moment…paranormal, suspense and YA.

Do you sing in the shower? No, but I do try to work out scenes

Excerpt:

Her facemore angular than most. Her lips, thick. A constant pout, like she waited to be kissed. When he looked at her big blue eyes and long blue eyelashes, he thoughtexotic, not alien.

“Monda.” He reached to wipe the tear. No, it was not his place. He shoved his hand into his pocket. “I didn’t mean you. I don’t think of you as alien. I meant other aliens, like the green guys from Salvador. Have you seen them? About a meter high with pointed teeth. You can’t tell the males from the females except when they have their armor off.” He wanted to pull her into a hug. To comfort her and show her how sorry he felt. But she was promised to another, and while he might be an idiot, his mother also raised him as a gentleman. “Really, Monda, I’m sorry.”

“I know,” she whispered.

“What I mean is you’re an alien but not an alien. You don’t look like an alien. Of course any guy would be honored to have a girlfriend like you.”

“Any guy, but you.”
